Wanted: Summer intern for dairy farm
About the farm:
Owners: Laura Johnston (Dip.Ag. ‘79) & Aubrey MacDougall (Dip.Ag. ‘75) who work with their son, Patrick MacDougall (Dip.FMT‘05, B.Sc.(AgEcon)‘09).
Purebred Jersey Herd, milking 65, total herd ~ 160 head (classified, official Valacta, genomic testing) #4 herd for LPI and for Pro$ in Jerseys in Canada for the December 2017 CDN proof release. Our focus is on breeding long-lasting cows with high components. Flush for herd use and export. Breeding stock sales year-round, mostly fresh cows.
90 hectares of hay, pasture and crop land. Self-sufficient except for protein and minerals. We do all our own field work except for combining and manure spreading.
Intern’s main tasks:
Milking (with one of us), calf care and feeding, other barn chores (cleaning, feeding), some fieldwork and haying.
Opportunity for motivated student to learn/improve dairy management skills as well as machinery operation, maintenance and repairs.
Required skills: Hard working team player, able to do physical work in demanding conditions.
Assets: previous experience, driver’s licence.
Room and board available.
We are willing to be internship hosts for university or college credit courses.
Salary to be determined according to experience and responsibilities.
